Copa Libertadores final 2021: Flamengo vs. Palmeiras live stream, prediction, how to watch, start time, odds

Written by on November 26, 2021

The stage is set at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay, for an all-Brazilian showdown for the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores final on Saturday as 2019 champion Flamengo and 2020 champion Palmeiras vie for South American supremacy.

The Centenario was home of Flamengo’s first-ever Libertadores title back in 1981 with a team led by Zico and Júnior. This time around, they’ll be searching for their third Libertadores trophy. Palmeiras are in similar shoes, having hoisted the Libertadores trophy twice, including last season in an all-Brazil final against Santos. Only 10 clubs have ever won the Libertadores three times — the winner will join Brazilian clubs São Paulo, Santos and Grêmio in that regard.

The winner will also join the following teams in the FIFA Club World Cup in early 2022 in United Arab Emirates: Chelsea (UEFA), Al Ahly (CAF), Monterrey (CONCACAF), Al Hilal (AFC), Auckland City (Oceania), Al Jazira (AFC, hosts). More details on dates and fixtures and the draw will likely come soon from FIFA.

Below you’ll find some storylines, how you can watch the match and much more.

As a reminder, after the Copa Libertadores wraps up, you can follow along every Brazilian club on Paramount+, home of Brasileirão (Campeonato Brasileiro Série A), as Atlético Mineiro seek their first title since 1971 and others jockey for spots in next year’s Copa Libertadores.

Storylines

Palmeiras: Portuguese tactician Abel Ferreira may not have any Brasileirão titles to his name since taking over the club just a year ago, but he does have domestic cup and managed to lead the club to Libertadores glory last season over Paulista rival Santos. Ferreira has a knack for coming up grand in single-elimination games, which is why he rested his key players midweek for the Verdão’s 2-2 draw to league leaders Atlético Mineiro. Raphael Veiga, Gustavo Scarpa, Dudu and Rony should be well rested for this one. Felipe Melo is working his way back from a knee issue and if he’s unable to play, Ferreira will likely opt to use 20-year-old Danilo in midfield.

Flamengo: Fitness and form is vital for Renato Gaúcho’s squad, which sit second in the Brasileirão table to Atlético Mineiro and would virtually need a miracle to win their third straight league title. The Libertadores is likely their only chance at a major trophy this season. For a club that’s has dominated won just about every trophy available in recent years, a trophy-less season would be considered by some a disaster.

Gabriel Barbosa, known by many in Brazil as “Gabigol,” is the leading Libertadores scorer with 10, including four goals scored in the two-legged quarterfinal round. He along with Bruno Henrique, Éverton Ribeiro, Michael, Filipe Luís, David Luiz and Andreas Pereira all sat out the midweek league game against Grêmio. Henrique, specifically, is rushing his way back from a knock in his knee suffered last week in league play. His ability to make runs and slip past back lines with his speed would be sorely missed in this matchup. Renato has been rotating his squad for weeks in order to field a healthy squad. If healthy and in form like they were earlier in the season, the Flamengo attack should be lethal and enough to make them favorites in this match. Obviously, that’s still a huge question mark.

Prediction

Expect a stingy first half with the two sides feeling each other out. As soon as the first goal is scored, the attacking and the flow of the game will open up. I have Gabigol scoring the winner and Giorgian de Arrascaeta providing a spark off the bench. Pick: Flamengo 2, Palmeiras 1
