Tottenham: Though it was to preview an EFL Cup tie, perhaps the most significant comments to emerge from Antonio Conte’s pre-match press conference were in relation to the Europa Conference League, from which Spurs were eliminated on Monday after UEFA judged them to have forfeited the match. Tottenham had a string of COVID-19 cases within their squad at the time (all of them have now tested negative) but it would appear not enough that the governing body deemed them unable to play the match, which could not be rescheduled. 

However Conte is refusing to entirely concede elimination from the tournament, saying it was “not definitive” whether Spurs would appeal to stay in. “Honestly for me, the club and our fans, it’s incredible the decision UEFA wanted to take,” said the Tottenham boss. “It’s unfair for sure. We deserve to play for qualification on the pitch, not in this way. I’m very disappointed for UEFA’s decisions. I can’t accept this.”

West Ham: Spurs’ 14 year wait for a trophy might be lengthy but it pales in comparison to West Ham’s; not since they beat Arsenal in the 1980 FA Cup Final have the Hammers been able to celebrate major honors. This might be the year to change that with the Europa League and EFL Cup both offering realistic paths to silverware before the new year brings the FA Cup.

David Moyes said, “I’d love to win a trophy, it would be a great achievement. I don’t want to be a side who win a trophy and then don’t win anything for 20 or 30 years. There’s a growing process where you have to build your team and club up to be competitive in all competitions.

“I wouldn’t want to win the League Cup and be near the bottom three in the Premier League, for instance. But we’ve tried to prioritize throughout the season and I’d love to be a trophy winner at West Ham. We’re in all the competitions and I’d love to stay in them.”
