Week 16 NFL picks for Texans vs. Chargers

Before you tune in to Sunday’s Chargers vs. Texans game, you need to see the NFL picks from SportsLine’s advanced computer model. The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception six-plus years ago. The model enters Week 16 of the 2021 season on an incredible 133-96 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season.

The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past five years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94 percent of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

For Chargers vs. Texans, the model is picking Houston to cover the 12.5-point spread. Although Los Angeles is 4-2 against the spread on the road this season, they are 1-1 as road favorites. The Chargers haven’t been a double-digit favorite at all this season, and the last time they were came in November 2020 against the Jets, when they failed to cover. Houston is 2-1 in its last three games this year as a double-digit underdog.

Texans quarterback Davis Mills hasn’t had the smoothest rookie season, but he’s quietly been more productive over the last several weeks. The third-rounder has completed 66 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and just two interceptions over his last four starts. Life could be amore complicated for him this week after Houston’s top receiver, Brandin Cooks, was placed on the team’s COVID-reserve list, but Mills has thrown for nearly 900 yards in his last four games and is looking more comfortable overall. Meanwhile, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was added to his team’s COVID-19/reserve list, as well as top defensive end Joey Bosa and receiver Mike Williams.

The SportsLine model predicts that Chargers QB Justin Herbert will top 300 yards with at least two touchdowns, while Mills will slog through the game, but the Texans will do enough to keep the game within two scores. The Texans cover in well over 50 percent of simulations.
