The Los Angeles Rams are headed to the Super Bowl for the first time in three years, making NFL history in their fifth Super Bowl appearance as a franchise. Los Angeles will become the first team to play in a conference championship game and a Super Bowl in their own stadium, as both games will be played at SoFi Stadium.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the first team to play a Super Bowl in their own stadium, which occurred last year. (The Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 at Raymond James Stadium.) SoFi Stadium was selected as the host of Super Bowl LVI in 2016, six years before the Rams became the second team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium.
There have been instances where teams have played in a Super Bowl that was hosted in their own market, but not their home stadium. The Rams were one of those teams, as they played at the Rose Bowl in Super Bowl XIV — but they played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The San Francisco 49ers played at Stanford Stadium in Super Bowl XIX, but their home games were at Candlestick Park.
The Rams and Cincinnati Bengals are the fifth and sixth wild card teams since 1990 to make the Super Bowl, joining the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers, 2007 New York Giants, 2010 Green Bay Packers, and 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All four of those previous teams won the Super Bowl, but that streak will come to an end since the Rams and Bengals will be playing each other in Super Bowl LVI.
Last season, the Buccaneers became the first team to “host” the league’s championship game since Jan. 2, 1966 — when the Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns in the 1965 NFL Championship at Lambeau Field. That was the final season before the Super Bowl era.
Now, the league has consecutive years with teams playing a Super Bowl in their home stadium.
