Every year, the BET Her Awards honor “the brilliance and beauty of Black women who are moving the community forward.” For the 2023 event, it’ll recognize the impact and influence of honorees Kandi Burruss, Kym Whitley, Marsai Martin, Sam Jay, Thasunda Brown Duckett and MC Lyte, who will also be taking the stage with a special performance.
Kandi is slated to receive the LOVE Award, given to women who work to advance Black love and relationships. Kym will receive the JOY Award for contributing to the feeling of Black. Marsai will be honored with this year’s RISING STAR Award, as she’s a “young, gifted and Black” rising star making a difference in the community. And MC Lyte, the recipient of the LEGEND Award presented by Walmart, will be honored for her demonstration of Black excellence and commitment to advance love, joy, pride and power.
Sam and Thasunda are set to receive the PRIDE and POWER awards, respectively, at this year’s event. The former honors women whose work advances inclusivity and representation for the LGBTQ+ community, while the latter is awarded to successful female entrepreneurs who pave the way for others and support Black women’s initiatives.
“Black women are the backbone of their communities,” said Tavia Pitts of BET Media Group. “For centuries Black women have done it all, displaying strength and grace that flows naturally in every act. It is an honor to have the BET Her Awards return to celebrate the incredible Black women who contribute to society and show unparalleled resilience and courage to propel our communities forward.”
The 2023 BET Her Awards, hosted by Bevy Smith, will take place March 5 in Atlanta. In addition to MC Lyte, Tamela Mann is set to perform.
