Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will not return to the field in 2021 as he was placed on injured reserve on Monday. The former first-round pick has been missed the Giants’ last three games while dealing with his neck injury. The Giants also placed receiver Sterling Shepard on injured reserve a day after Shepard tore his Achilles during New York’s 21-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys

“Over the course of the past few weeks, Daniel has been examined by Dr. Frank Cammisa of Hospital for Special Surgery and Dr. Robert Watkins of the Marina Spine Center at Marina Del Rey Hospital,” Giants senior vice president and medical services/head athletic trainer Ronnie Barnes said in a statement. “Our medical team has continued to consult with Dr. Cammisa and Dr. Watkins regarding Daniel’s condition and symptoms, and at this point, Daniel has not been cleared for contact.

“We felt the prudent decision was to place Daniel on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. With continued rest and treatment, we expect a full recovery.”

When healthy, Jones showed signs of growth during his third NFL season. In 11 games, Jones completed a career-high 64.3% of his passes for 2,428 yards and 10 touchdowns. He threw just seven interceptions two years after throwing 24 as a rookie. Jones, who rushed for a career-high 298 yards and two touchdowns, was sacked a career-low 22 times after he was sacked 83 times during his first two seasons.

Jones will be replaced by either Mike Glennon or Jake Fromm for the Giants’ final three games of the season. Fromm relieved Glennon during Sunday’s loss, going 6 of 12 for 82 yards. Glennon was 13 of 24 for 99 yards and three interceptions before being pulled. The Giants have upcoming road games at Philadelphia and Chicago before closing the season with a home game against Washington.

“We got to a point in the game where I wanted to see what Jake could do, point blank,” Giants coach Joe Judge said of his decision to change quarterbacks. “We weren’t doing enough moving the ball otherwise, so I wanted to make sure I had the chance to see Jake and that will obviously open up a conversation about what we’re going to do this week. We’ll talk about it as a staff and we’ll make the best decision for the team.”
