Derrick Rose injury update: Knicks guard to undergo another procedure on right ankle

It sounds like the New York Knicks will be without Derrick Rose even longer. The Knicks announced on Friday afternoon that the veteran guard will undergo a procedure on his right ankle, and a timeline for a return is undetermined at this time.

Rose originally injured his injury back in December during a game against the Houston Rockets. He underwent ankle surgery and was expected to return at the end of February or early March, but after visiting a doctor after Thursday’s practice it was determined he needs another procedure done to fix the injury, per New York Post’s Marc Berman.

Though the Knicks were without Rose since mid-December, the original timeline of his injury suggested that his return was around the corner. Now, though, with Rose out for an even longer amount of time, it means they’ll continue to be thin at the point guard position. Especially after it was announced this week that Kemba Walker would be shut down for the remainder of the season as the veteran guard has decided to focus on preparing his body for next season, specifically his ailing knee that has hindered him the past few seasons.

With Walker shut down for the remainder of the season, and Rose out for an unspecified amount of time, that means that the Knicks will likely go to Alec Burks to become the team’s starting point guard. Burks has filled that role for the Knicks at times this season, most notably when Walker was pushed out of the rotation due to disappointing play back in November.

Rose’s extended absence is just the latest bump in the road for a Knicks squad that had high hopes of building upon their success from a season ago that took them to the postseason. But as they return from All-Star break, the Knicks find themselves with a 25-34 record, and currently sit two spots out of the final play-in spot in the East. There’s certainly work to be done in order to get into the playoffs, and missing a key contributor like Rose for even more time isn’t ideal for a New York team that has struggled to consistently generate offense this season.
