Coi Leray‘s “Players” is seeing success on the Billboard Hot 100, and it was all recorded in one take.
“When I went in there, we spent an hour and 20 minutes on that song,” she tells Billboard of the studio session. “I go in there and cut all my melodies. I gotta bring the writers into my world. We sat there for an hour and 20 and came up with a singy hook and we came up with not that. I was pissed — like, I hate wasting time.”
She continued, “I said, ‘This not sounding right. It’s too generic. Let me go in there and try something else and do some straight rap s***.’ … I hop on the mic and it just flowed: ‘Girls is players too.'”
Coi credits the swag heard throughout the track to the time she spent with Diddy and his crew. “I been hanging with Diddy and we been partying,” she said. “I got fresh from the parties and vacations with them, and I’m back in the studio and it just flowed.”
“Players,” released back in November, dropped following the release of her star-studded debut album, Trendsetter, in April. As she works on her next project, Coi says she’s been in the studio alone, noting this year is all about her being “selfish.”
“I’ve been in the studio locked in by myself. I feel like, at the time, I had so many features because I was so on the move. I was up-and-coming … I’m more just focused on myself,” she said.
“I feel because I made it about everyone else these past couple years, this is the year I said I’m being selfish,” Coi continued, adding that she does have a desire to “collab with so much more artists.”
