Drew Lock is expected to start for the Denver Broncos in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Chargers as Teddy Bridgewater continues to work back from his concussion, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Bridgewater was carted off the field and transported to the hospital after taking a scary hit during the Broncos’ 15-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals two weeks ago, and is reportedly not healthy enough to return just yet.
Lock started in Sunday’s 17-13 loss against the Las Vegas Raiders, and completed 15 of 22 passes for 153 yards. He missed a few throws he should have completed, but was also let down by his receivers multiple times. Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam had a costly drop on third down while Lock was trying to orchestrate a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. The Broncos recorded a season-low 158 yards of total offense in the loss, the fewest they’ve gained in a game against the Raiders since 1978.
This is an opportunity for Lock to showcase what he’s capable of as a starting quarterback. The Mizzou product went 4-1 after being inserted into the starting lineup late in his rookie season, but struggled in 2020, going just 4-9 as the starter.
The 7-8 Broncos own the hypothetical No. 13 seed in the AFC, which is last place among all playoff-eligible AFC teams. Not only will they have to defeat the Chargers on Sunday and the Kansas City Chiefs next week, they will need some outside help to make the postseason.
