You better believe the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping for not one, but two Christmas miracles ahead of their Week 16 battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their two most lethal weapons, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, were both moved to the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list recently, putting their availability against the Steelers in very real jeopardy. They received news on Saturday, however, that Hill was reportedly able to clear league protocol and will suit up on Sunday — per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network — but the verdict remains out on Kelce.

Kelce will undergo several more tests heading into and on Sunday, according to multiple reports, with the goal of joining Hill in clearing protocol. But the Chiefs may not wait to pull the trigger on the official transaction regarding Kelce, with NFL Network reporting that the organization plans to activate the seven-time Pro Bowl tight end on Saturday from the reserve/COVID-19 list despite having not yet cleared protocol — in the event he clears on Sunday.

Read that previous sentence as many times as you must in order for it to make sense.

In other words, if Kelce doesn’t clear protocol, he won’t play against the Steelers, regardless of his designation; and that would mean the Chiefs are risking an active roster spot on game day by rolling the dice on Kelce’s status. It’s obviously something they’re comfortable doing, given his value to the team’s offense and odds of improving their chances of landing an 11th win and keeping them seated in the No. 1 spot atop the AFC going into their final two regular-season games.

It’s a critical game for the Chiefs — as they battle for both home-field advantage and the only first-round bye in the AFC — and they feel much better about their chances knowing Patrick Mahomes will have Hill to throw to, and crossing their fingers, eyes and toes that Kelce might be able to join them.
