2022 Australian Open women’s odds, picks, predictions: International tennis expert fading Ashleigh Barty

Written by on January 15, 2022

Australian Ashleigh Barty is the odds-on favorite to win the 2022 Australian Open, and for the third year in a row is ranked No. 1 in the world. Barty is the defending Wimbledon champion and will be out to win her third Grand Slam championship. She also claimed the 2019 French Open title, and is 4-0 this year after winning the Adelaide Tournament last week. Barty may be the favorite in the 2022 Australian Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook at +275 (risk $100 to win $275), but a number of other players will be poised to take advantage if she stumbles when the Australian Open 2022 begins on Jan. 17.

Among them is Naomi Osaka (+600) and Garbine Muguruza (+200). Osaka is a two-time Australian Open champ, winning in 2019 and last year, while Muguruza took second in 2020. Iga Swiatek also comes in at +1200, while Simona Halep is one of a trio of contenders at +1400. Before making any 2022 Australian Open picks or predictions, check out the expert tennis picks and analysis from SportsLine’s Gavin Mair

A renowned women’s tennis handicapper, Mair has cashed in huge in the past. In the 2020 French Open, Mair picked Iga Swiatek to win (-163) and win in straight sets (+140), and he was right on both counts.

He also called unseeded Jelena Ostapenko (80-1) winning the 2017 French Open, Naomi Osaka (32-1) winning the 2018 U.S. Open and Bianca Andreescu (20-1) winning the 2019 U.S. Open.

Now, Mair has scrutinized the latest Australian Open 2022 odds and released his coveted best bets to win it all. He’s sharing all his picks and analysis at SportsLine.

Top 2022 Australian Open women’s predictions

One shocker: Mair is fading the favorite in Barty (+275) because of the immense pressure she will be under in her home country. It seemed to be a factor when she did not advance past the quarterfinals last year. She also faces a difficult draw and may run into Osaka in the fourth round.

Barty has 14 career singles titles, but has not gotten past the semifinals at the Australian Open. She has, however, been in contention in each of her last three appearances there, falling in the quarterfinals in 2019 and 2021 and the semifinals in 2020. She had taken a four-month break since the 2021 U.S. Open and began her season at Adelaide, knocking off defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals before beating seventh-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2.

“I believe that rather than siding with the favorites it is a good betting strategy to support the top level players who have not been burdened by a difficult draw, and who therefore have a good opportunity to be in the mix at the business end of the competition,” Mair told SportsLine.

Mair sees better values on the board and he isn’t including Barty in any of his 2022 Australian Open bets.
