It’s a matchup of unbeaten teams on Sunday when Club America visits Jalisco Stadium to take on Atlas in a Mexican Liga MX match. Both teams are off to 2-1-0 starts in the Apertura after America finished second in the Clausura campaign at 12-2-3, while Atlas was seventh with a 7-4-6 mark. Club America has been one of the league’s most consistent teams and is hoping to make a run at its first league title since 2018. Las Aguilas were upset in the quarterfinals of both liguilla playoffs last season. Atlas lost in the quarterfinals of the Clausura but finished 16th during the Apertura campaign.

Roger Martinez and Mauro Lainez have created havoc in the attack, with Martinez scoring one and Lainez setting up one of the team’s four goals. This quality depth is the team’s strength. Richard Sanchez and Alvaro Fidalgo do most of the creative work in the midfield, while Pedro Aquino is an excellent two-way player. Aquino provides relentless cover for a defense that is led by Sebastian Caceres and welcomes the return of 22-year-old Jorge Sanchez from the Olympic team.

Los Zorros have scored just three goals but have yet to concede one, and they come in off a 1-0 victory at Pachuca. After kicking off with a scoreless draw against Pumas and following with a 2-0 victory against Juarez, they have been building confidence. They play a physical game that could disrupt America’s flow, and Las Aguilas could be caught off guard while re-establishing their preferred starting lineup. Captain Aldo Rocha plays a critical role, hounding opponents and providing a lot of help for a defense that yielded just 15 goals in the 17-game Clausura.
Julio Furch has three goals in seven games with Atlas, including two this season. He had five goals in 17 matches for Santos in 2020-201 before joining Atlas, but he missed most of the Clausura after surgery on his ankle.
